Abstract

Humorous writing occupies a significant position in literature as a creative expression that combines entertainment with intellectual and social insight. This study explores the nature, scope, and artistic dimensions of humor and satire in Urdu literature. It examines the distinction between satire and humor, highlighting how satire exposes social flaws through subtle criticism, while humor creates delight, amusement, and psychological relief. The article argues that successful humorous writing requires artistic refinement, intellectual maturity, and a balanced approach that avoids bitterness and offensiveness. The discussion further analyzes parody as an important branch of humorous literature, emphasizing its role in transforming serious literary styles and themes into amusing yet meaningful representations. The views of prominent scholars and critics, including Dr. Anwar Sadeed, Dr. Wazir Agha, Rashid Ahmad Siddiqui, and others, are examined to illustrate the theoretical foundations of humor. The study also traces the historical development of Urdu humorous literature, with particular reference to Mir Jafar Zatli, Akbar Allahabadi, Patras Bukhari, Ibn-e-Insha, Mushtaq Ahmad Yousufi, and the influential journal Oudh Punch. Furthermore, the article investigates various forms and manifestations of humor, such as wit, parody, satire, ridicule, and comic expression, while distinguishing refined humor from vulgarity and abusive language. It concludes that humor serves not only as a source of laughter and entertainment but also as an effective medium for social criticism, moral reform, cultural reflection, and human interaction. Through its capacity to balance seriousness with amusement, humorous literature enriches both literary traditions and societal consciousness
